CALCIUM LACTATE
JIAAN BIOTECH today is one of the Largest leading Manufacturer , Supplier and Exporter of Calcium Lactate IP/USP/BP/FCC across the Globe
Jiaan Biotech’s Calcium Lactate product approved by the FDA as a direct food substance affirmed as generally recognised as safe, calcium lactate is used as a firming agent, flavouring agent, leavening agent, stabiliser, and thickener . Calcium lactate is also found in daily dietary supplements as a source of calcium
Calcium lactate is a food additive that’s typically added to a wide variety of foods to enhance their texture and flavour or help extend their shelf life. It may also be added to animal feed or used to treat water to make it suitable for human consumption.
Calcium lactate is commonly used as a food additive in packaged foods, such as :
- Nectars
- Jams, Jellies, and Marmalades
- Butter, Margarine, and other types of fats used for cooking or frying
- Canned Fruits and Vegetables
- Beer
It’s sometimes also added to fresh foods, such as Mozzarella Cheese, Fresh Pastas, or Pre-cut Fruit to help them maintain their firmness or extend their shelf life.
You can tell whether a food contains calcium lactate by looking for it on the ingredient label. Calcium lactate may also be labeled as E327.

CALCIUM LACTATE AS DIETARY SUPPLEMENT USES:
When consumed as a supplement, calcium lactate may provide benefits similar to those associated with other calcium supplements, including:
- Stronger bones. When taken together with vitamin D, calcium supplements are thought to contribute to the development and maintenance of strong, healthy bones.
- Reduced blood pressure. Calcium-rich diets may help slightly lower systolic blood pressure (the top number) in those with elevated blood pressure. However, there seems to be little benefit among people with normal blood pressure levels.
- Protection against preeclampsia. High calcium intakes during pregnancy may lower the risk of preeclampsia, a serious complication that affects up to 14% of pregnancies worldwide .
- Protection against colon cancer. Studies suggest that a high calcium intake from foods or supplements may reduce colon cancer risk. Still, more research is needed to confirm these findings.
- Older studies further suggest that chewing gums containing calcium lactate together with the artificial sweetener xylitol may help protect against cavities.
PROPERTIES
Calcium lactate is one of the chelated forms, which means the calcium is combined with an organic acid.
Calcium lactate is produced by mixing lactic acid with calcium carbonate or calcium hydroxide.
Calcium lactate contains less elemental calcium than two other forms of calcium commonly used in supplements like calcium carbonate and calcium citrate.
Calcium lactate is used to prevent or treat low blood calcium levels in people who do not get enough calcium from their diets. It may be used to treat conditions caused by low calcium levels such as bone loss (osteoporosis), weak bones (osteomalacia/ rickets), decreased activity of the parathyroid gland (hypoparathyroidism), and a certain muscle disease (latent tetany). It may also be used in certain patients to make sure they are getting enough calcium (e.g., women who are pregnant, nursing, or postmenopausal, people taking certain medications such as phenytoin, phenobarbital, or prednisone).

Calcium Lactate IP is a pharmaceutical-grade form of calcium lactate, meaning it meets the standards set by the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) for purity and quality.
It is a salt composed of calcium ions and lactate ions, and it is used as a source of calcium in various applications.
The “IP” designation indicates it is suitable for use in pharmaceutical products and dietary supplements.
- Composition and Properties:
- It’s a white to cream-colored, nearly odorless crystalline powder or granules.
- It’s a calcium salt of lactic acid, with the chemical formula C6H10CaO6.
- It’s soluble in water and freely soluble in boiling water, but very slightly soluble in ethanol (96%).

Calcium lactate, as defined by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), is a calcium salt of lactic acid. It comes in various hydrated forms, with the pentahydrate being the most common
- Calcium lactate has the chemical formula C6H10CaO6, with a molecular weight of 218.22 g/mol for the anhydrous form.
- It typically presents as a white to cream-colored, crystalline powder or granules, and is nearly odorless with a slightly acidic taste.
- It’s soluble in water and slightly soluble in ethanol.
- The pentahydrate form (C6H10CaO6·5H2O) has a molecular weight of 308.30 g/mol.
USP specifications
- Calcium Lactate, calculated on the dried basis, must contain not less than 98.0% and not more than 101.0% of C6H10CaO6.
- The USP also specifies tests for identification, purity, and other characteristics.
Uses and applications
- Nutritional Supplement: Calcium lactate is a widely used source of calcium, crucial for bone development and maintenance, prevention of osteoporosis, and healthy teeth. It is used to treat and prevent calcium deficiency.
- Food Additive: The FDA recognizes it as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for its various applications in the food industry, including:
- Firming agent
- Flavor enhancer
- Leavening agent (in baking powders)
- Nutritional supplement
- Stabilizer and thickener
- Pharmaceutical Excipient: It can also be used as a filler or diluent in pharmaceutical formulations.
- Other uses: It has applications as a buffering agent, pH adjuster, and sequestrant in cosmetics and personal care products.
